This is the third year that the USA Cycling Championship has been held in Greenville. The course runs over Paris Mountain and passes by our church. Last year we watched from there. The cyclists also pass by just a few blocks from our house on a flat stretch before they begin climbing the mountain. The photo above is taken on the fourth and final pass and includes George Hincapie, second from the left. A couple of weeks ago he was riding in the Olympics and today he is back home in Greenville. Click on the photo for additional shots on my Flickr page.

Friday night I took pictures of the first varsity game of the season. We played at a rival school and had a good crowd come out. The game began much as last season went as we got the ball on a punt deep in the opponents territory only to have them intercept the first pass and score a couple of plays later. Unlike last year the offense was able to answer. By halftime we had scored 28 points, eight points more than last year’s total in 10 games.
The shot above was taken right after the opening kickoff as the teams lined up for the first play of the season.

I walked out into the back yard this afternoon and saw a hawk fly low overhead. I went in a grabbed the camera to take this shot. ISO was set too high (I have to remember to set the camera back after shooting at dusk) but it still turned out pretty well. There were three hawks overhead but they soon flew back over the mountains.

I have come to the end of the first week of classes for the new school year. It was a long week, not so much from the teaching but more from the little snags that come up outside of actually working with the students. As a result I have been exhausted when I got home and haven’t had the energy to shoot any photos. Well, that’s not completely true since I did take over 400 on Tuesday night for the First Day Blowout, an annual event celebrating a new school year.
Since I haven’t posted anything this week I looked back over some favorite photos from the summer and came across this one that I took at the Greenville Zoo. I’ve used this one as desktop wallpaper, something about the expression makes me really like this shot.
